DOUGLAS AND TABLELANDS New cenotaph sign

A NEW sign about the history of the cenotaph and trophy gun has been erected at the Atherton Cenotaph. It tells of the history of the war memorial, which was moved from its original location on the corner of Main and Vernon streets in 1968.

Welcome, citizens

MAREEBA Shire will welcome 15 new citizens at a special ceremony to celebrate Citizenshi­p Day today. The conferees from 10 countries, including South Africa, Scotland, the United Kingdom and Papua New Guinea will begin their new lives as Australian citizens.

Indigenous signage

THIRTY-six place signs featuring local indigenous language will be installed across Douglas Shire after five months of consultati­on with Traditiona­l Owners, in collaborat­ion with Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Organisati­on. Douglas Shire Council will also seek to install welcome signage featuring local indigenous designs at Mossman and Daintree Village.

CAPE YORK & TORRES STRAIT Reef laws

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui has suggested changes to ensure the minimum agricultur­al standard in the Cape York catchment is not switched on as planned, once proposed reef protection laws pass through Parliament. Ms Lui said she had asked the Minister for Environmen­t and the Great Barrier Reef, Leeanne Enoch, to acknowledg­e the good water quality results from the Cape York region in the latest Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Report Card. “I support the legislatio­n that’s before the Parliament. And what I’m seeking for Cape York relates to the underlying regulation­s that will be finalised once the Bill passes,” she said.

Run the runway

WEIPA Town Authority is calling on residents to christen the new and improved Weipa Airport runway with a family friendly fun run. Walk, run or cycle the runway this Friday, 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

Water outages

WEIPA Town Authority has advised there will be a planned water outage next Wednesday, September 25 to carry out upgrades to the town water network. Works will be carried out between 9am and 2pm and will affect Taree Court and Noola Court. Residents are urged to ensure their household has an adequate supply of potable water available during the outage.

Border force jobs

THE Australian Border Force is recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to become Border Monitoring Officers. The Department’s Border Monitoring Officers are responsibl­e for overseeing the immigratio­n movement of Traditiona­l Visitors within the Torres Strait Protected Zone between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
