True kindness shows spirit

-

ONE of the best things about working in the media is highlighting great acts of humanity and generosity.

While people can remember bad news, we must celebrate the positive headlines because that’s what should make us proud about where we live.

Today we shine a light on the generosity and kindness of Far North business, Cairns Hardware.

They’ve helped out MiHaven apprentice carpenter Sam Brayshaw who had his tool trailer stolen.

Mr Brayshaw, 21, had not long celebrated being named HIA Apprentice of the Year before thieves swiped his important tools of trade.

Cairns Hardware sales account manager Chris Atkins stepped in and, along with Makita and Paslode, came up with $2000 worth of tools to get Mr Brayshaw back to work.

It’s a great little yarn that thankfully has a happy ending — let’s hope the grubs who took his tools are found and punished.

The story follows another which started with sadness and shock.

Chilean backpacker Constanza ‘Kuki’ Escudero, 26, was stabbed through the neck in the kitchen of a Bunda St hostel in August just days after arriving in Cairns on an Australian adventure.

But through the generosity of the Far North’s tourism industry, emergency and health services, local media and businessman Martin Anton, Kuki’s memories of Cairns will not be filled with just pain and fear.

She penned a beautiful letter expressing her thanks to the community, which the Weekend Post published on Saturday.

All cities have ugly headlines but acts of kindness and generosity such as these show a community’s true spirit.
