Winning schools rise to occasion Utility in key role as club rebuilds

COMPETITIO­N in a Tablelands inter-school touch football tournament wrapped up with teams from Tolga, Malanda and Mareeba named the victors.

More than 270 primary and secondary students participat­ed in the 2019 Allan Rockley Memorial Interschoo­l Touch Football Competitio­n over an eight-week period.

State schools from Atherton, Kairi, Malanda, Mareeba, Millaa Millaa, Tolga, and Yungaburra participat­ed along There is no rival coach in the FNQ Football Premier League who took Mareeba United lightly, and a few of the remaining teams will be happy to see the back of the Bulls. Whether or not Krakowczyk stays on for another season as the Premier League coach remains to be seen, but the club must do all it can to keep this squad together. Carroll and Plowman in particular are fantastic leaders, and there is no better duo in FNQ to lead the Bulls to a future Premier League title. With a season of the region’s top grade under their belts, Mareeba United’s cast of young players make this team a much more dangerous propositio­n in 2020 and beyond. with primary schools Mount St Bernard College, Herberton, St Joseph’s Catholic School, Atherton, and St Stephen’s Catholic College, Mareeba.

The senior division grand final was contested between Mareeba State High School one team and MSB.

Mareeba came away the victors, 19-9, with player of the final awarded to Mareeba’s Shaun Stephens.

St Stephen’s College and Malanda State High School played the intermedia­te grand final. Malanda won 10-5. Thomas Cuda, from St Stephen’s, was player of the final.

Malanda Eels and Tolga Tornadoes fought out the junior division, with Tolga victors 6 to 5. Player of the final was Malanda’s Riley Kuhn.

The Allan Rockley Memorial Trophy was awarded to the school with the best overall result in all divisions of the competitio­n. Tolga was the primary school champion and MSB took out the honours in the secondary division.

“He does whatever’s required for the team and he’s got some outstandin­g attributes both as a player and as a person that we think will be really beneficial to us over the next couple of years.”

Hampton is coming off a disrupted season for the Cowboys after rupturing his right bicep in the opening minutes of their Round 10 clash with the Parramatta Eels in Townsville.

He managed just eight NRL games after also starting the year with feeder club the Northern Pride, but Hampton (above) has made a strong injury recovery and was fit enough to play in the later rounds. Parr said the club had “no doubts” that Hampton would be back to his best when the Cowboys return for preseason training in November.

“He was touch and go there for the last game or two of the season. If we had have been playing finals footy he probably would’ve played,” Parr said.

“We’ve got no dramas with that. He’s had no complicati­ons with the injury and he’ll be ready to go.”
