A CAPE York beef producer angered at the recent shooting of breeding stock at a remote farm west of Weipa is calling for more to be done to protect the livelihoods of graziers.

Last week two white Brahman heifers were shot dead on the 130,000 hectare York Downs Station.

Owner of the station Kate Witherspoon said one animal was left to rot while the other had been taken for its meat, the head and heart was left behind.

Ms Witherspoon said the problem of stock being killed and stolen for food was ongoing for many Cape York graziers but York Downs Station was especially hard hit, because the Peninsula Development Rd ran through the property and its proximity to Weipa. MOCKA’S Pies and Bakehouse is dominating the baking industry on a national level.

“They were maiden heifers. So, not only have we lost the two cows, we have lost their progeny for the next eight years and then it’s the hassle of mustering that mob again,” she said.

“All up we may have lost $7000 per cow.”

Ms Witherspoon said Weipa Police had been notified and were investigating.

“It’s frustrating and disaptime with their bush kangaroo pie and crocodile laksa pie.

Mocka’s owner Nigel Quinn said winning gold was all about getting creative.

“The whole idea is to push the boundaries and do something different,” he said.

“I’m already working on ideas for next year.”

The Grant St bakery, which celebrates its 50th birthday pointing that it’s a continual problem,” she said.

“All other properties around here have a similar problem.

“And I have also contacted Safe Food to see what they are going to do about the constant problem up here.”

Senior Sergeant Antoni Lesic of Weipa Police said officers had collected evidence at the property.

“We did the initial investigation and attended the scene. The local criminal investigations branch will look at the job but there is a likelihood it will go to the Stock and Rural Crime Squad for further investigation,” he said.

“York Downs is in the position, unfortunately or fortunately, a main road does travel through the property and it does make accessibility to those locations a lot easier than some of the others.” next month, has specials throughout October and mini gold medal taster pies.
