Capras star to join Brothers for 2020

- ROWAN SPARKES QUEENSLAND CUP

BROTHERS Cairns have added another Queensland Cup star to their 2020 playing roster, securing the signature of Central Queensland Capras outside back Luke George.

A versatile winger, centre or backrower, George played more than 100 Super League games in his native England before moving to Australia in 2014.

The 180cm, 100kg flyer has spent the last three seasons with Rockhampton-based Queensland Cup club the Capras, where he made 13 appearances in 2019.

George, who played with the Northern Pride in 2015 and 2016, said a Far North return was “always on the cards”.

“I’ve got family up here and just really love living in Cairns,” he said.

“But the opportunity to still play football, that was a big deal for me as well.

“I just wanted to get back to really, really enjoy playing football again.

“The last couple of years have been pretty tough.”

George played a total of 35 games for the Capras, scoring seven tries, but the club struggled for success, finishing as wooden spooners in 2019 and 2017 and second-last in 2018.

The Englishman, who turns 32 next month, said the decision to sign on with the Brethren for 2020 was an easy one.

“I was at Brothers before I left for Rockhampton,” he said.

“I was at the Pride but I was affiliated with Brothers. So they were my first choice.

“I’m hoping that it will be a nice smooth transition … the coach has changed since I was here last, but I’ve been speaking with (coach) Paul (Stevens) and the direction the club’s wanting to go in is great.”

He said he would bring experience to the squad and help to develop younger players.

George’s announcement comes a week after the club’s signing of Northern Pride playmaker Jordan Biondi-Odo for next season.
