Holiday fun at museum

Plenty to keep kids engaged

- DANIEL BATEMAN daniel.bateman@news.com.au

IF YOU are looking for something completely different to do with the kids these school holidays, have a hand at code breaking, or even miniature room making.

Cairns Museum has a jampacked school holiday program, operating from September 23 to October 3, with some retro activities to keep inquiring young minds entertained for hours.

It is the first time the museum has offered a school holiday program.

One of the highlights of the program is a special kids’ cooking session, “Recipes to Remember”, where children can get messy and have fun making and baking dishes their grandparents used to enjoy.

The session is designed for children aged six to 12.

Cairns Museum manager Suzanne Gibson said the holiday program was varied and engaging for children and parents or guardians.

“The sessions are a little learning and a whole lot of fun,” she said.

The “Code Breakers” session is an opportunity to learn the skills that played a part in nations winning wars.

The sessions are for children aged six to 12.

“Kids will learn morse code, and use their new-found skills to make and break secret codes,” Ms Gibson said.

And inspired by the genius of master craftsman Les Paul, children will also have the chance to design and make their own perfect bedroom diorama, in miniature form.

The “My Dream Bedroom” session is best for children aged nine to 12.

Ms Gibson said the museum was also partnering with Minjil Cultural Services to keep kids entertained and enthused about the historic artefacts in the visitor attraction.

“Minjil are wonderful with kids, with lots of hands-on sharing of culture, language and dance,” she said.

“They were a real hit at our open day, and they are back by popular demand.”

Kids can take a guided tour of the museum, which promises to be interactive, informative and fun.

The tours enable children to explore the museum in a new and exciting way.

These tours are recommended for children aged seven to 12.

The museum is open from 10am-4pm on Mondays-Saturdays, and from 10am-2pm on Sundays.
