Footballer­s aim to impress at championsh­ips

GOLD Coast Suns academy positions and potentiall­y AFLW contracts for 2020 will go on the line over the next week on the Sunshine Coast.

The best from the Far North travelled south yesterday for their first games of the Queensland championsh­ips today.

AFL Queensland’s regional manager for Cairns, Kieran Daley, believes strong squads have been selected for the three north Queensland representa­tive teams.

“The under-14 boys and girls headed down on Thursday to play in the state championsh­ips, (in) which players will be vying for selection into the Gold Coast Suns Academy for the 2020 season,” Daley said.

“All teams are made up differentl­y, with the boys selected from players from Cairns and Cape York, the girls picked from Cape York, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Capricorni­a. The under-17 team is Cape York and Cairns girls, who are all searching for selection in the Gold Coast Academy, with the next step from there being part of the Queensland under-18 squad for the 2020 Draft and hopefully on to an AFLW list in 2021.” Monday: Sunshine Coast at 9am UNDER-17 GIRLS Friday: Sunshine Coast at 6pm Saturday: Gold Coast South at 4pm Monday: Central Queensland at 1:30pm Tuesday: Brisbane South at 11am
