Targa drivers busted

FOUR Porsche drivers taking part in Targa Great Barrier Reef will be slapped with fines after being caught on camera driving dangerously on the Gillies Range.

Police were handed a motorist’s shocking dashcam footage which captured the drivers crossing double white lines to overtake other vehicles on the range.

It did not occur during a stage of the rally.

Police launched an investigation to identify the drivers, who will now each be issued $240 tickets and three demerit points for crossing double lines.

The drivers are three Sydney men, aged 51, 48 and 38, and a 39-year-old man from Perth.

Cairns police Senior-Sergeant Dion Readman said all four drivers had been spoken to.

“The drivers’ identities had to be confirmed and correct procedure had to be followed through before taking issues,” he said. “When the drivers were spoken to, they all acknowledged the incident and assisted in the process.

“They admitted that a mistake had been made and it wasn’t an intentional act. A lot of it had to do with them being on an unfamiliar road with an overtaking lane that ceased and all of them were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Sen-Sgt Readman said police were assisted by Targa organisers during the investigation.

“Road safety is one of their key messages for not just their event, but their philosophy,” he said. The drivers will have 28 days to contest the infringement notice if they choose to.
