All geared up for last term

- JACK LAWRIE

TRINITY Bay State High School Year 12 students Mia Barrand (left) and Tara Reisinger are looking forward to starting the last term of their school years today. They are both relieved to be concluding their school time with the old system, instead of the new ATAR, which the next wave of students will tackle. Both girls are aiming high for their OPs, shooting for a 1-6 to get into university.

CAIRNS Year 12 students go back to school today, hitting the books for not only their final term, but the final term to use the Overall Position (OP) system of education.

In 2020, the Queensland Certificate of Education system will be fully implemented, with Year 12s taking part in external exams for their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Trinity Bay State High School Year 12 students Tara Reisinger and Mia Barrand were both relieved to be concluding their school time with the old system.

“All the ATAR classes we’ve spoken to have talked about how daunting it is,” Miss Reisinger said. “From what I understand, they start learning grade 12 work in grade 11 term four, it’s more full-on.”

Both girls are aiming high for their OPs, shooting for a 1-6 to get into Griffith University to study double degrees in psychological science and criminology, and forensic science and criminology.

“That wasn’t planned, our interests just happened to line up,” Miss Reisinger said.

“It’s the last of everything for us – we were the first ones to do prep in 2007, so being the last group to do OPs is fitting,” she said.

“We’re going to miss our teachers and all the friends we’ve made at the end of it all, they’ve been instrumental in making us who we are today.”
