Peek behind the easel at Artists@Work hub

- JACK LAWRIE

A QUIET hub for Cairns artists to work on their latest pieces will open its doors to the public next week.

There is a move afoot to increase awareness of and develop the art culture of Cairns.

Enter the Cairns Art Society Artists@Work hub.

The purple building opposite Rusty’s at 29 Sheridan St will celebrate its third year providing a space for Cairns artists to work by holding an open day on October 13.

Members of the public can come and enjoy the celebratory atmosphere, and the buzz of artists’ enthusiasm for their craft.

Deanna exhibited with her in the 1980s at her Bingil Bay gallery and is still a client today.

Both the Helen Wiltshire and Mission Arts galleries promote Deanna’s artwork via Facebook, Instagram, and gallery space.

There are now 16 artists whose exciting and everchanging art work is featured in the two gallery spaces.

There are some artists who have been with the gallery from the start, but there are new artists whose work is adding to the colourful array on the walls and creative sculptures on the floor.

Some artists featured are internationally and nationally recognised, while some are just starting out on their creative paths.

During week days, the gallery hosts art classes with participants from ARC Disability Services.

“It’s wonderful to see all the great work and expressive talents that individuals showcase through their art and being included in their local arts community,” ARC general manager Sheridan Lawton said.

Weekends are always busy with several artists working in their own personal styles, mostly inspired by the world of the Wet Tropics.

All work will be for sale. THE 2019 Cairns Bonsai Society Exhibition and 30th Birthday at the Tanks, is a free community event welcoming all to experience the wonder and awe of bonsai art. Explore the beautiful bonsai trees on display and participate in workshops to learn the basics. Opens October 25, 6pm. Workshops are 10am-noon and 2-4pm October 26 and 27.

IT’S WONDERFUL TO SEE ALL THE GREAT WORK AND EXPRESSIVE TALENTS
