Heritage gardens footpath proposed
THE historic entry gates at the Mulgrave Mill are set to be shifted to a new public garden linking some of Gordonvale’s most famous features along a pedestrian trail.
A report before tomorrow’s Cairns Regional Council meeting outlines an $870,000 proposal to build a heritage walk linking the Greenpatch camping ground to Norman Park.
The footpath – which would remain open even during Greenpatch’s annual sixmonth shutdown – would feature special landscaping, seating and interpretative signage showcasing the township’s rich history.
“Funding for the proposal is available via a Works for Queensland grant and the Mulgrave Mill who have committed to relocating the gates at their own expense and making a financial contribution to the development of the Mill Gardens,” the report states.
“Operational costs to maintain the new pathway and gardens is $30,000 annually.”
The Mill Gardens would be built to the southern side of the Gordonvale Railway Station, with its own network of footpaths, seating, signage explaining the sugar production process and farming history, and a viewing area overlooking the Mulgrave Mill.
“Alterations are proposed to the carparking layout opposite St Michael’s School and to the boundaries of the adjacent QR land in order to accommodate the heritage trail,” the report continues.
“Works are proposed to the intersection of Mill St and Church St to connect Norman Park and the town to the Mill Gardens and Heritage Trail.”
The draft concept plan will go out to public consultation if it gets the green light at tomorrow’s meeting, with a report on the outcomes of the engagement due in January.
