Youngsters show ability in annual poetry competition

-

FIVE Holy Cross enrichment students recorded an outstanding result after they took home major awards in the annual Ipswich Poetry Feast.

The poetry feast is an initiative of the Ipswich City Council and is an international competition for poetry writing across all ages held each year.

This year, Isabella Holiday, Year 4, won first place in the Ipswich District Teacher Librarian Network Award (8-10 years) with her poem Forevermore and Amaeh Reed, Year 6, got third for her poem Black Saturday as well as a highly commended in the

Broderick Family Awards (11-13 years) section.

“I was so excited to win first place,” said Isabella.

“You never really expect it to be you, so when it is, it’s amazing.”

Isabella appeared via Skype at the awards ceremony held in Ipswich on November 1.

Students Joel Sage, Year 2, Leon O’Donnell, Year 3, and Elisha Wilkinson, Year 3, also got highly commended awards for their efforts.

There were a lot of very happy and excited faces when students were presented with their commemorative keyrings and certificates at a whole school assembly.

Enrichment teacher Leanne Morton said: “It’s been another wonderful year for our students. We submitted even more entries this time around, so to come up with these excellent results for a second year is a great result for our creative and hardworking students.”
