Readers have a hoot in class

By Hayley Burtt and Lucas Fischer, Year 5, St Andrew’s Catholic College

-

EVERY term at St Andrew’s Catholic College our amazing librarians and library staff (Verity Reid, Kaz Casey and Sarah Calligaris) help the teachers of the junior years recognise great readers.

This term, there were Uhu Awards, Smarties Awards and Golden Owl Awards.

The Golden Owl award is given to the class that is the quietest in the library throughout the term.

This term it went to Melanie Chalmers’ class in Year 3.

Teacher Rohan Lee put his hand up for his class being the quietest; however, Mrs Reid told him to put his hand down.

Uhu Awards are prized in the junior years.

They are owls that have been bought from all over the world and given to students from the Big Book of Names.

Mrs Reid said the recipients of the owls were picked by divine providence.

In term four, Year 6 coordinator Deb Kearney gave an owl from New Zealand to a student who is about to start in the middle years.

We were really excited that the award went to Jack Tubb.

Finally, there are smarties awards.

These are awards that homeform teachers choose from their class for readers who have been improving or have been dedicated to reading throughout the term.

We were excited to find out that we were smarties winners.

When you win a smarties award you get a certificate and a small packet of Smarties!

Deb Harrison won the teachers’ smartie award, which was well deserved.

Thank you to Mrs Reid, Mrs Casey and Mrs Calligaris for organising the Uhu Awards each year.

We were excited to be smarties winners and will totally be reading over the Christmas holidays.
