Can footballers edge out rest?

EDGE Hill United swept all before them to dominate the FNQ Football Premier League competition, but is a full trophy cabinet and just two losses in the calendar year enough to claim the title of Far North sport’s best team of the year?

As 2019 winds down, the Cairns Post is revisiting FNQ sports to determine the best teams of the year.

The Tigers were the standard bearers in the Premier

League. They led the league from start to finish to win the minor premiership, then came from behind to claim the grand final trophy.

A week later, they outplayed Townsville’s MA Olympic to clinch the Crad Evans Shield and a rare treble in the top grade as they proved FNQ Football’s Premier League champions were better than the best North Queensland Football had to offer.

Coached by Crios O’Hare, Edge Hill United’s squad included a handful of former National Premier Leagues players from the now-defunct Cairns FC alongside a squad which had already earned the title of being one of the best football sides in the region.

The Cairns Post will reveal its list by the end of the month, but in the meantime, we want to hear who you believe should be in that top echelon.

Port Douglas Crocs made it four straight AFL Cairns titles (and five of the past six) with a dominant performance against the South Cairns Cutters in their grand final, while WGC Sharks put the exclamation point on a brilliant Cairns Netball season in a famous overtime grand final win.

And that’s before we consider the rest of FNQ sport.
