TWO Cairns teachers are helping take the anxiety out of the new tertiary admissions scheme.

Queensland students will sit tests for the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank for the first time in 2020.

Ruth Wydell and Jayme Rafferty have started Radical Maths, offering mathematics preparation classes to students from January 13-15.

“The stress and worry that students will encounter during these two years of crucial study can be minimised with the right preparation,” said Ms Rafferty.

“The last thing we want is for Cairns kids to be at a disadvantage. There are heaps of tutors and prep programs for kids in the southeast, so why should our students in FNQ miss out?”

The short mastery courses will allow students to consolidate and extend their knowledge of mathematics and help build their self-confidence, strengthen core skills and develop study strategies.

“We both have the belief that all students can learn mathematics,” said Ms Wydell.

“We have seen students soar with confidence when they are sufficiently prepared and encouraged. These preparation courses aim to give them this confidence. Cairns students deserve this.”

The three-day intensive short courses will run with very small groups of no more than 15 students.

There will be two courses offered for those starting Year 11 and Year 12.

The classes will run for three hours each day and will be student-focused, “so that learners of all abilities will achieve maximum value”, said Ms Rafferty.
