AFTER extensive upgrades in 2000, Nudgee College’s athletics track facility was so good that US and Australian track and field teams were using it to train before the Sydney Olympic Games.
Peter Fullagar says sport at the college has never been the same since.
The Nudgee College principal said in the 19 years since the Games, the grounds had become a thriving hub for sport in the Brisbane area.
Primary schools across the district now use the area for carnivals and the school’s sport teams frequently train on the grounds.
While not the principal when the area was built, Mr Fullagar said that the grounds had proved to be “a very positive experience” for the local and international athletics community.
Grounds across regional Queensland and NSW cities would be transformed over the next decade to host the Games, similar to Nudgee College’s transformation.
A Queensland Olympic Games “would be a great opportunity for our boys to witness and experience the community coming together in celebration of the Olympics and what this international event means – to give one’s best and strive for personal excellence,” Mr Fullagar said.
