Buyers go wild for a cause

- JACK LAWRIE

A MASSIVE garage sale across Cairns has raised more than $10,000 to support the bushfire appeal.

Dozens of volunteers, vendors and caterers worked through the scorching heat on Saturday, auctioning art and selling donated goods to raise money for Kangaroo Island and Victoria Wildlife.

Sales from the weekend brought in $9400, with the donation of $800 from the sale of a volunteer’s friends’ car set to tip them over the line.

Organiser Mechel Pearson paid tribute to the generosity of the community.

“It was very hot, everyone was drinking lots of water, but we had sales going off,” she said. “I’m a garage sale queen, I love doing them, I love going to them, and when you have a cause like this, one person’s junk is someone else’s treasure.

“Basically, the feeling is when someone has an idea and other people get behind it, miracles can happen.”

Woree woman Monica Fittock was proud to help out, having been there all day selling drinks, and walked away with a pair of light-bulb chandeliers as a present for her grandson.

“It’s for a good cause, it was a great day,” she said.

A DETOUR is in place in Innisfail directing traffic from Jubilee Bridge Innisfail, heading towards Coquette PointRoad via

Fitzgerald Street. The road closure and traffic detour is in place from 6am to 6pm until this Friday, to allow critical sewer works on The Corso, East Innisfail. Local residents have been advised of the road closure. For more information, contact Cassowary Coast Regional Council on 1300 763 903.

Turf transfer

A HELICOPTER will today transfer a “spiritual” piece of Cowboys history from 1300SMILES Stadium to the new Queensland Country Bank Stadium field in Townsville. Businessman Tony Ireland said many volunteers helped lay the turf at the Cowboys’ old stadium and, while supporters are not attached to the venue, the field feels sacred.
