Champs dedicate win to ‘12th man’

- ROWAN SPARKES

WHEN Atherton were crowned Cricket Far North two-day champions, there were plenty of smiles from the club’s faithful supporters, but one man had a bigger smile than anyone else.

Well-known Atherton fan Anthony Murio couldn’t hide his excitement after the Tablelands club claimed victory over Rovers at Griffiths Park yesterday.

Atherton all-rounder Michael Salerno said Murio was a massive part of the club.

“We call him our 12th man,” he said.

“He comes to every single game and he just loves sport, whether it’s cricket or rugby league.”

Salerno said Murio was the ultimate club supporter and an inspiration to the team.

“He’s Atherton’s number one sporting fan and everyone in the community loves him,” he said.

“He talks volumes of what this club is about and we really do try and get up for Anthony – because we see how upset he gets when we lose.”
