Trinity makes splash
ONE of Cairns’ top school swimming clubs has capped off its most successful 12 months in the pool.
Trinity Anglican School took home the ‘Far North Queensland JX Club of the Year’ at the 2019 Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association Queensland Awards in December.
The award is presented to a club in each region of Queensland that has achieved the highest number of swimmers in the Australian Junior Excellence Program for the 2018-2019 season.
The awards were held in Brisbane at the conclusion of the 2019 State Championships (December 14-20) at which TAS fielded a team of 15 representative swimmers, its largest ever, who competed in 90 individual events.
TAS’ director of swimming Duncan Todd said that of the 15 representatives they secured seven individual finalists, four individual medallists and three
State Champions. “Our swimmers competed in a total of 27 finals, winning 16 medals; seven gold, five silver and four bronze,” he said.
Leading the charge was Ike Martinez, who won five gold, one silver and one bronze and was crowned State Champion (boys 13 years) to become Far North Queensland’s first state age champion.
Swimmer Ella Goddard won one gold, two silver and two bronze, Thomas Chen won one gold and one silver and Lauren Morris won one silver and one bronze.
In all, TAS Swimming accounted for 16 out of 20 medals won by able-bodied athletes in the region.
“Our team’s impressive performance shone and really ‘turned heads’, cementing our place as the dominant swimming league in the Far North,” Mr Todd said.
TAS Swimming received the JX Club of the year award for 2016-17 and 2013-14.
