Stuckey shows leadership

IN a big show of faith from head coach Ty Williams, Queanbeyan Blues recruit Joshua Stuckey has been elevated to the Northern Pride’s leadership group for 2020 without having played a game for the club.

The backrower was unveiled as part of a new six-man leadership group at the club’s annual pre-season camp on the weekend.

Williams said Stuckey, who was part of Queanbeyan’s premiership-winning side in 2019, had been nothing short of impressive since arriving at Barlow Park.

“Obviously he hasn’t had a chance to put on a Pride jersey yet, but the way he’s delivered himself in the pre-season and since coming back from the Christmas break has been really good,” Williams said.

“He’s showed more than enough leadership qualities to be part of that group, especially over the last two weeks.”

Stuckey will be joined by Rod Griffin, Javid Bowen, Matolu Laumea, Patrick Gallen and Tom McGrath in the new-look leadership group.

“All six guys are very, very different in what they bring to the club,” Williams said.

“These guys will obviously lead us into 2020, but also the future.”

While the Pride has named a leadership group for the new season, it is yet to decide who will lead the side out or address referees during the game in the traditional captain’s role.

“We haven’t really discussed that yet,” Williams said.

“Moving forward, these are the guys we need to lead us.

“Over the next four to five weeks, we’ll have our trials and nut out a captain there.”
