Support for today‘s problems as FNQ plans for tomorrow

- COMMENT JENNIFER SPILSBURY Cairns Post editor

THE State Government’s $3.8 million to help the Far North’s tourism industry recover from the effects of the coronavirus is welcome news.

As the shutdown on flights to and from China bites our economy, real support to get more visitors here is a boost.

It will certainly make Tourism Minister Kate Jones’ walk into the Cairns Convention Centre today a little easier.

Almost 500 people will attend the Cairns Post’s Future Tourism luncheon at which Ms Jones will participate in a Q&A panel.

The Cairns Post’s Future Tourism campaign, five months in the planning, was always planned to run now with Ms Jones in attendance, but there is no doubt coronavirus has heightened people’s awareness.

This event cannot avoid coronavirus but as the campaign’s name suggests, it’s not all about today.

It’s about the future – what do we need to do today to give visitors a meaningful reason to come here tomorrow?

What are the opportunities worth pursuing?

What assistance – or levers need to be pulled – to help make these opportunities a reality?

What will we do ourselves that will make a difference?

And what will make us even more resilient for when the next threat knocks on our door?

The Cairns Post has had amazing engagement and feedback from the community throughout this two-week campaign and today’s incredible attendance proves there is a desire to work together to make things happen.

Tomorrow we step out the Future Tourism action plan.
