Growth ahead for city
Construction market now in better place Chamber upbeat on migration changes
AFTER a surge of businesses re-entering the Cairns construction market last year in the hunt for work, one local company is positive 2020 will be one of growth and stability for the region.
Will Barnett and Steve Oates are the co-owners of Sawcom Industries, which incorporates Sawcom Welding and Engineering and Sawcom Homes.
Mr Barnett said Cairns was “economically steady” at the moment, despite recent hits.
“We are outside of the large fluctuations that some of the major cities experience and although Cairns is affected by its business microclimate, we are lucky enough to have a diversity of industries which collectively require new constructions,” he said.
“Cairns is steadily growing and Sawcom is proud to be part of the expansion and building of our amazing city.
“When the large construction projects within the city wrapped up we experienced an influx of newly-available businesses quoting on jobs subsequently making it a competitive marketplace to be trying to win jobs from.
“Sawcom’s service and quality reputation prevailed allowing us to keep busy within that flooded marketplace.
“Coming into 2020 this market flooding has seemed to have normalised, it is business as usual and we are looking forward to a big year and the start of the region’s exciting 2020 projects.”
Mr Barnett said the business did not build the same house twice and employed a draftsman to tailor floor plans and aesthetic features.
Sawcom’s portfolio of house designs can suit low, medium and high-budget clients and incorporate eco-friendly features wherever possible.
“Having two divisions within the company – Sawcom
Homes and Sawcom Welding and Engineering – allows us to keep the steel manufacturing elements of the constructions in-house, rather than employing the service of contractors, and we pass this saving onto the client,” said Mr Barnett.
“We also have a large team of qualified carpenters which enables us to keep an eye on quality. We don’t have trades that are on a limited time schedule due to low contractor rates.”
