Wallace gets his chance to shine

CAIRNS Reef Sharks’ “big signing” Cameron Wallace will be searching for a position in the Queensland country men’s team as the top water polo players from across the state converge on Mackay today.

Wallace, who is from the Gold Coast originally, is living and working in FNQ as a physiotherapist and was quickly snapped up by the Reef Sharks.

Cairns Water Polo president Jesse O’Hara says newcomer Wallace will be one to watch for the club this weekend.

“Cameron was a member of the championship-winning Gold Coast team last year,” O’Hara said.

“Cameron will be out to get the attention of selectors for the Queensland state side with a strong tournament ahead.

“Our men’s side has a different composition this year with a mix of youth and experience.”

Cairns is entering a men’s team, who won bronze at last year’s event, this week and the FNQ women are joining forces with Mackay to enter a combined side.

Wallace is enjoying being part of the growing club that is Cairns Water Polo, as well as shooting for a spot in the Queensland Country Men’s team for the first time.

“I would have loved to represent Queensland country last year but I could not go away as I was on university placement,” Wallace said.

“I have put my name down this year and I would be really keen to feature down on the Gold Coast in May.

“I would think Jesse would be a good chance to make the team as well after he played in it last year.”

The 2019 Queensland Country Water Polo Championships was held at Cairns’ Tobruk Memorial Pool. Mackay will today welcome teams from Cairns, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton and Townsville.
