- CHRIS CALCINO

CAIRNS Airport’s soaring terminal fees have been confirmed as tourism authorities struggle to make the city an attractive prospect to new airlines in the wake of the Chinese travel ban.

Airservices Australia is in charge of setting the costs for airlines to use terminals around the country as well as fees for aviation rescue and firefighting services.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Government-owned corporation said that fees in Cairns remained at the highest level in Australia at $12.20 per tonne.

That compared to $6.18 in Brisbane and $5.62 in Sydney – both of which have been adding a string of new international flights in recent months.

For a full Airbus A330 weighing 182 tonnes, terminal fees alone per

$2200 in Cairns.

The same aircraft would cost $1020 in terminal fees at Sydney Airport and about $1120 at Brisbane Airport. landing are

Townsville charges just $2.27 per tonne with terminal navigation tower services provided by RAAF.

“There has been no change to terminal navigation and aviation rescue firefighting charges at Cairns airport,” the spokeswoman said.

“Airservices’ prices have not increased since 2015.

“Airservices has no plans to change landing charges.

“Airservices prices are set in consultation with our customers under a long-term pricing agreement.”

Any proposed price increases are subject to oversight by the ACCC.

Rescue and firefighting fees in Cairns are also towards the upper end of the charges list at $7.67 per tonne – although much lower than Darwin’s $21.75 fee.

Sydney has the lowest firefighting rate at $3.67 per tonne.
