Flying high at leadership event

MY HEART was pounding and I didn’t know what GRIP leadership was going to be like.

I walked into a room filled with people and we got directed to our seats.

The presenters were Andy and Cam and we were split into two groups of students.

I was in Andy’s group and to start the day, they picked four people – two from each team, a boy and a girl.

These kids had five seconds to name three things that fitted the chosen category of “things that fly”.

The boy said Unicorn, Bird, and Griffin. Andy got an idea for our signature move which was a unicorn impersonation action.

Time went so fast and I realised that it was actually really fun. After lunch we went back in and wrote about what we had learnt in section 1.

The most important thing I learnt was to mix with other people.

We then did a partner activity which I was with my friend Lana for. I had to close my eyes and then Lana had to tell me what to draw. I drew a cupcake and Lana had to draw a beach.

We then did lots of writing about “leading the way”.

There are three important steps to this which are:

1. Know the way,

2. Go the way, and

3. Show the way.

GRIP leadership was so much fun and I would highly recommend it to any student leaders from other schools.

I LOVED Grip because there was this person called Andy who taught us about GRIP and we played activities such as colouring with our eyes closed, and we had partners.

Someone was partner A and

I was partner B. I partnered up with Dustin and he drew a really funny muffin and we laughed. Then it was my go and I drew a weird beach then we made loud noises, along with whoever got a badge which said loud noises with headphones on them.

Then we worked in our books and we described people from little clips.

There was a lady and if she highlighted your work, you

I WAS shaking when we arrived and I saw how many kids and schools there were attending.

The whole room was full with coloured uniforms and bubbling over with conversations and excitement.

It was brilliant because we got to mix with other kids and make new friends from other schools. When it all started, I didn’t hesitate, I just jumped straight on in because it just felt like everything was going to be so much fun.

One of the presenters, called Andy, walked on to the stage and started telling us that we would learn a lot of leadership goals today.

Andy called up two kids from one side and two other kids from the other side, and he explained that they were going to play a game called “five second rule”.

The boy had to say three things that can fly – he chose a Griffin, Bird and a Unicorn.

We ended up learning a cool Unicorn action which we kept using throughout the day from this game.

One of my favourite sessions during our time there was called “Leading the Way”.

We learnt that generosity involved sacrifice and a willingness to help people in need. Leading the way is less about being given a position and more about having the ambition to help others.

GRIP Leadership was awesome because you could mix with other schools and make new friends.
