On youth crime
So individuals smashed through a shopping centre at Redlynch and stole over $5000 worth of goods, alcohol, cigarettes. I thought it may have been maths books and science books to take to school on Monday. No such luck.

The Cairns Post highlighting juvenile crime on the front page I think is counter productive. It’s like don’t come to Cairns, it’s not safe. Also I think a blight on our law enforcement, tourism and liveable city appeal. Most crime is coming from children with a dysfunctional upbringing and home life. Vested interests then distort the article with a exaggerated, paranoid, dramatised version motivated by a political agenda.

Underage crime. Get real and make their families repay or pay off the damage they do. This way the families will take control of their children, like in the old days. They are not the public responsibility.

Youth crime. The community is asking some very basic questions of Minister Di Farmer and our local state government representatives. Putting aside our under resourced and under staffed police, let’s focus on the Department of Youth Justice. Does this department have adequate funds to provide the services the community expects? More importantly, is the department, especially in the
Cairns and Tablelands regions, fully staffed? Surely there must be a response available from someone out there, or are the facts on the ground at odds with the current political posturing? This is a disaster of this government’s making.
