Youths reoffend after staying in bail houses

- DOMANII CAMERON

ALMOST all young criminals who have been placed in the State Government’s controversial bail houses have reoffended.

It can be revealed 121 of the 145 offenders who stayed in the houses since the program began in late 2017 went on to commit more crime after leaving.

Slammed as “another complete failure” by the oppo

S & S Trike Tour owner Shaun Abrahams, who has been successfully operating for four years, has been forced to hang up his helmet.

He said his insurance company’s underwriter decided to sition, the extraordinary revelation comes just a day after the government announced a crackdown on child criminals running riot and feeding public anger across the state.

Youth Justice Minister Di Farmer, who has already committed to scrapping the program if it’s found not to work, yesterday revealed the houses were now able to house homeless youths at risk of crime.

The change follows two extraordinary

“pull the blanket out”, leaving Port Douglas’ unique motorised tricycle experience unable to be insured.

Mr Abrahams said no other insurance companies specialised in dealing with trike bikes reports released late last year highlighting issues with the Townsville, Logan and Carbrook houses, including that young offenders were not following house rules.

“We made a commitment to re-evaluate the program at the end of this year and if Supervised Community Accommodation are not proving to be successful after the implementation of recommended changes we will scrap the program,” Ms Farmer said. for commercial use.

“It was the best job, we would go out and have fun every day, meet different people from all around the world,” he said.

Rick Maxwell, owner of Uplift

Meanwhile, Police Minister Mark Ryan doubled down on his criticism of magistrates letting “hardcore” child criminals out on bail, despite the new Youth Justice Act directing that children only be remanded as a last resort.

Mr Ryan’s comments drew criticism, including from Civil Liberties Council vice-president Terry O’Gorman, who said magistrates could not be blamed if “police are too lazy to appeal bail decisions”.

Watersports, who hired out jet skis and did parasailing tours, found himself in a similar situation. After just over five years Mr Maxwell made the difficult decision to cease operation late last year.

Asked in what instances the courts were getting it wrong, Mr Ryan repeated eight times that the “legislation was clear” that community safety came first.

Among the points in the government’s crackdown, culture-based rehabilitation including on-country initiatives will be trialled in Townsville, Cairns and Mount Isa while a 24/7 Police Strike Team will include youth justice workers for high-risk offenders.
