Dunk revamp sealed
THE 30-year lease of Dunk Island spit has been granted to Mayfair Iconic Properties.
A Cassowary Coast Regional Council spokeswoman said the approval included the beachside bar and camping area upgrades.
“A 30-year lease agreement between the council and Mayfair Iconic Properties has officially been signed which will pave the way for revitalisation of the Dunk Island spit,” she said.
“The lease follows the council’s approval to develop a covered beachside bar and viewing decks, as well as upgrades to camping areas, barbecue and toilet facilities.
“Other works which will be undertaken by the lessee include sand replenishment and revegetation activities.
“It’s expected that developments of Dunk Island spit will provide for array of nature and adventure based activities while maintaining the laid back style which the region and the Mission Beach area is famous for.”
Mayfair Iconic Properties is already well under way with the spit revitalisation activities with barges travelling to and from the island and Mourilyan Harbour.
CEO Stuart Duplock said the spit was “key to activating Dunk Island and the broader Mission Beach region”.
“We will ensure its rejuvenation is aligned with our vision to make Dunk Island the most sought-after island destination in Asia-Pacific,” he said.
“We are already on the track to incorporate worldclass architecture and public facilities to host a wide range of must-see visitor activities that leverage the natural beauty of Dunk Island, Mission Beach and the Great Barrier Reef.
“Supporting the local community is at the forefront of our thinking.
“The residents and business owners of Mission Beach have already started to benefit hugely from the regeneration of Dunk Island and the Dunk Island spit.
“There will be considerable employment opportunities across construction, hospitality and operational activities, to name just a few.
“For instance, our locally outsourced construction works for the Spit Bar have created employment for about 65 people in the region.”
Mission Beach businessman and Conus Business Consultancy Services partner Pete Faulkner said the news was welcomed.
“As far as Dunk Island is concerned, people continue to be generally optimistic on developments with regard to Mayfair Iconic Properties,” he said. “There is a good deal of support for the development on the spit and many locals would love to be able to have facilities they can use at this popular spot.”
