A misleading minister
ACCORDING to Police Minister Mark Ryan, the judiciary are at fault in their interpretation of the Youth Justice Act.
However, if one looks at the explanatory notes attached to the legislation, one finds terms such as “detention as a last resort” and “an explicit presumption in favour of release”.
Quite clear directives to the judiciary one would think. Therefore, I would suggest, the minister is engaging in misleading obfuscation when blaming the judiciary for the rampant youth crime wave across Northern and Far Northern Queensland.
I also note the Member for Cairns is now pitching for a “Cultural Healing Camp” where young offenders would undergo “culture-based rehabilitation”.
All far too little far too late for the long-suffering people of Queensland’s northern regions.
