Mission for fair ride share

Ride On Australia launches in Cairns

THE newest ride share service to launch in Cairns picked an ominous day to begin.

Ride On Australia started operating in Cairns on Friday, March 13 – but driver-leader for Cairns Edwin Bruce said the night had a lucky feel to it.

“We were quite excited, it was a busy weekend,” Mr Bruce said.

“The amount of people who want to go out on Friday the 13th was quite high,” he said.

The launch marked Ride On’s first Australian city – the company plans to launch in a different centre each week.

Head of operations Ryan Newell said the birth of Ride On Australia was due to the growing resentment in the industry because of the excessive commissions paid by drivers to overseas ride share companies and the declining service standards for passengers.

“The Ride On platform empowers our member drivers to earn a viable part-time and fulltime income, and for our passengers to get better value fares from the highest-rated, serviceoriented drivers,” he said.

Drivers can earn money through fares, referred passengers and other referred drivers, recruited to a team run by a “driver-leader”.

Ten per cent of fares are held in a “profit pool” which is paid out to highly rated and performing drivers.

Mr Newell said passengers could also earn 5 per cent rebates on their next ride.

“The Ride On difference is that our driver members are highly motivated to serve their passengers,” Mr Newell said.

There are currently 80 drivers in Cairns out of a projected recruitment of 100.

Ride On will service the region from Mission Beach to Port Douglas.
