ATHERTON

Atherton Bowls Club hosted its popular annual two-day Mt Baldy Classic Men’s Fours on March 7 and 8, with 64 players from Tablelands and Far North clubs competing.

The winning team was E Blythe, R Lloyd, J Leisha and N Roberts; second was R Hubbard, J Phillips, D Lawton and D Laycock and third was G Davies, C Flanagan, M Greenwood and M Weaver. The major sponsor of John Cole Toyota plus Guilfoyle Funeral Services, Barron Valley Hotel, Atherton Internatio­nal Club and Atherton Trophies and Engravings are the businesses which make this event so successful each year. Volunteer club members work hard before and during the weekend to ensure this annual fundraisin­g event is a huge success. Without their work this event would not be able to take place. The club thanks all the sponsors for their generous support.

Men: Thursday bowls were a washout. Better conditions over the weekend saw a few games played.

Sunday, a team of four players, Dave Egan, Ranald Edwards, Billy Smith & Chris Payne, travelled to Dimbulah to play in the Tobacco Festival Open Fours – and thank you to Dimbulah for hosting a great day of bowls. Club Championsh­ip games scheduled for this weekend include, on Saturday, the Men’s Pairs with Terry Richards & Col Widdows to play Col Maxted & Dick Pitt. In the A Grade Singles, to be played on Sunday, Dave Egan to play Kiwi, Eric Smith to play Nev Fletcher & Sas to play Steve Cue. And in the Handicap Singles, also to be played this Sunday, Terry Richards (-2) to play Bob Hando (-5). For Jackpot Bowls this Saturday, names in by noon with card call at 12.45pm. SILKWOOD

Wednesday 11: The weather did not allow us to play a midweek bowls session. Friday night was the usual BBQ, followed by barefoot bowls, but attendance was low.

Sunday, March 15, club champions competitio­n: B Grade Men’s Singles, Morris Pedrola and Delmo Tarditi kept us in suspense till the end. Congratula­tions Morris for progressin­g into the next round 25/23.

Dan Dunn and Daniel Gauci’s game was discontinu­ed after 15 ends and Dan was the declared the winner.

Ladies pairs: Mirella Berryman and Annette Gauci convincing­ly defeated Jeannette Bucklar and Karin Rastoll 27/18, congratula­tions, well done! Social games: Carol Lowe and Clair Bourke def Jean Messina and Ron Mathews 21/11. Brian Brooks and Tony Cates were defeated by Len Charman and Barry Green/Alan Hudson 34/1.

Every Friday night we have barefoot bowls and barbecue.

Twelve teams played in the 2020 Atherton Under the Roof on Saturday, including the three District Teams. Winners were Shirley Sampson, Christine Scott, Edna Parks and Jeanette Ward. Second, Trisha Arnold, Ann Rowbotham and Frances O’Shea and third, Sue Brady, Glenda Andersen, Trish Spicer and Louise Hoskins.

Next Sunday is the Graham Hotel Open Fours at Mareeba. More teams are required.

The TFNQDLBA District Teams played their first games as teams at the 2020 Atherton Under the Roof, Between now and when they travel to Brisbane at the end of April they will play in the Graham Hotel Open Fours at Mareeba on March 22, the Dimbulah Crema Open Fours on April 4th and the Marlin Coast Ladies Classic on April 19.
