Far North cricket season over, out
THE last wicket has fallen in Cricket Far North’s 2019-20 season after a directive to call stumps on the season in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Queensland Cricket backed Cricket Australia’s call to recommend the cancellation of all organised cricket within the community for the rest of the season.
Cricket Far North will follow that advice, with all cricket in FNQ cancelled immediately.
CFN had completed the two-day and one-day seasons, and had just two weekends of Twenty20 games to complete.
President Peter Huey said the executive would meet to discuss how the T20 season would be recorded.
“We have two
Huey said.
“We either abandon the season due to extenuating circumstances, or the competition ends and the team on top of the table is named premiers.
“We’re just volunteers and (Queensland Cricket and CA are) paid to do this, so we will support their decisions.”
CFN’s presentation night is also likely to be canned, but any decision will be formalised after the executive meets in coming days.
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson said the decision was made to ensure cricket was doing everything it could to contribute to the global effort to slow, and eventually stop, the spread of coronavirus.
CA boss Kevin Roberts said the state cricket chairmen agreed unanimously to call off the Sheffield Shield final and give NSW the title given they were a clear two games ahead of Victoria in second place.
“We did have NSW 12 points clear the top of the table (with one round to go) which made our decision making a little easier,” Roberts said. options,”
