Saying ‘I do’ proves tough for couples wanting a dream wedding

’We’ve saved for nothing’:

FOR almost 12 months Amber Slavica and Billy Nottle have been planning their dream wedding.

The loved-up Mt Peter couple have been saving every cent since becoming engaged in May last year – co-ordinating with venues, photographers, celebrants, bakers and florists and getting excited to spend the day with 50 of their closest friends and family on the sands of Mission Beach.

But the 26-year-old optical assistant and apprentice electrician are now in limbo with new government restrictions limiting weddings to just five people due to coronavirus concerns – unsure whether to push ahead with just a tiny group, or reschedule the whole thing.

“The May 3 date is really special to us because it’s our anniversary of when Billy first asked me out and also when he proposed (a year later),” Ms Slavica said.

“Now it’s like we’ve pretty much saved for 12 months for nothing.

“We had 50 people coming, then once all the coronavirus stuff started happening we had seven pull out. And Billy’s nanna lives in South Australia so she couldn’t come.”

The wedding was originally planned to take place on the beach with the reception at Mission Beach Resort.

Ms Slavica said the resort had now closed until September, although fortunately fully refunded them.

She said they were being urged by family to reschedule until next May, but after finding out early this year she was pregnant the couple were hoping to be married by the time the baby was due in September.

“We just wanted to be united as a family when the baby comes,” she said.

If they do forge on, Ms Slavica said they would likely just have the celebrant, a photographer and her mother at the ceremony, likely still in Mission Beach.

“I’d have to do my own hair and make-up,” she said.

“I don’t know if I’d even be able to have a bouquet of flowers because I don’t know if they’ll be open.”
