BEST MOVIES FOR ISOLATION
PLUS LUNCH IDEAS
Margaret Pomeranz is one of Australia’s best-known movie critics, presenting
Screen with co-host Graeme Blundell on Foxtel Arts. In this time of self-isolation, one might say it’s a perfect job (although we all love to debrief a good flick with a friend). We’ll hear more from the Screen team later this week for their long weekend movie marathon tips – don’t miss it. Today, Margaret shares her must-sees of the moment.
ONCE UPON A TIME ... IN HOLLYWOOD
Tarantino’s best movie since Jackie
Brown. Brad Pitt fully deserving of his Oscar, but the uncrowned Leonardo DiCaprio is equally fabulous, Margot Robbie heartbreaking as Sharon Tate. It’s Hollywood 1969 and the City of Angels is about to experience its dark heart. It’s mischievous, with references to cinema and Hollywood scandal embedded in a story that we know will lead to tragedy.
PARASITE
Don’t let the subtitles of this Oscarwinner from Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho put you off seeing it. This is a fabulously seditious, funny film with a subtle social critique subtext. It’s one of those releases that takes you on a totally crazy journey as a poor family gradually infiltrates itself into the home of a rich one. It’s a film that is ultimately so satisfying you want to cheer.
THE DEATH OF STALIN
Armando Iannucci’s delicious take on the scrambling for power in the aftermath of the dictator’s death. It has a great international cast that delivers wonderful performances from Steve Buscemi as Khrushchev, Michael Palin as Molotov and Simon Russell Beale as Beria. Then there’s Andrea Riseborough as Svetlana, Stalin’s daughter, and Rupert Friend as his son, Vasily. It’s an absolute hoot this film and it’s so clever.
