OMG moment on road

- GRACE MASON

A WOMAN, whose driving was so bad that many other motorists called police, has been charged after she allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading more than seven times the legal limit.

A 36-year-old Goldsborough woman was allegedly seen by witnesses swerving across the Bruce Highway near Babinda and almost colliding with a guard rail just before 9am on Monday.

Several motorists called police, including one who then saw the vehicle, a black Mazda 2, on Howard Kennedy Drive where the woman was pulled over by officers.

She was given a roadside breath test and was taken to Innisfail police station for further testing where she allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.351 per cent.

The woman’s licence was suspended and she was issued with a vehicle immobilisation notice. Her registration plates were confiscated for seven days.

She is scheduled to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on July 6.

The arrest comes just a day after a 49-year-old Tully man was allegedly busted more than four times the legal drinkdrive limit.

The man was intercepted by officers on Tully Gorge Rd on Sunday and taken to Tully station where he recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.225 per cent.

His licence was suspended, and he is scheduled to appear at the Tully Magistrates Court on July 16.

Tully police Sgt Rod Stanley said this was the same winding road where four young men died in a horrific crash last year.

“So being intoxicated on that road is a recipe for disaster,” Sgt Stanley said. “People shouldn’t even be leaving home in the first place at the moment, let alone doing it in those conditions.”

The woman’s reading is not the highest recorded in the Far North region.

A Tablelands woman was busted at a shocking 0.454 per cent on a Yungaburra street in

February, 2016. A 22-year-old Kuranda man was caught in October 2016 with a reading of 0.4 per cent after being spotted by police weaving all over the Kennedy Highway.

A Trinity Park woman was also caught in January 2018 with a blood alcohol reading of 0.354 per cent after crashing her Hummer into her house.
