Kids surprise dad as Edwards named best

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

BEING named Cricket Far North’ s Player of the Year was special enough for star Rovers all-rounder Brent on Edwards.

To have his award win se-cretly recorded and presented by his two children, Isaiah and Paisley, made it unforgettable.

Edwards was named CFN’ s best and faire st award winner on Saturday night, capping a day in which the organisation revealed award winners on its Facebook page. The presentation night’ s cancellation due to the govern-ment restrictions brought into combat the corona virus meant CFN had to think outside the box, and they clearly hit home with Edwards’ award win .

“That was pretty great ,” he said .“They did it on the sly.

“I hit play and all of a sud-den the kids came up. They knew it was going to happen and were a bit excited .”

When Edwards played well, Rover s generally did well in a season they made two grand fi-nal sand had an outside chance of cracking the Twenty 20 fi-nals before COVID-19 forced an early end to the season.

Rovers were particularly strong in the one and two day formats, with Edwards leading both competition sin terms of wickets–including a startling33 wickets in six matches in the two-day format ,14 more sc alps than nearest contenders Atherton duo Michael Salerno and Thomas Boor man. He was also the second-leading run-score rint he two-day format.

Edwards’ approach to the summer was simple: if he wanted his team to be success-ful in 2019-20, he had to lead from the front. “We had to take wickets and score a lot of runs to be successful, so if I could leadfrom the front the guys would probably get on board and back me up,” Edwards said.

“When I started to get wick-ets the boys got up and it just went from there.”

It went all the way to the de-cider in two formats, but both ended in heartbreaking defeats to an Atherton side which swept to both available titles.

“We had opportunities in both games but we just didn’t take it,” Edwards said. “A fewof the guys hadn’t been in that situation before so I think they’d be better for it next year.

“Atherton had such huge depth. If the top order didn’t fire you had guys like Fred Pit-torino come in and get it done.We might not have had the same depth but we put our best foot forward.”

Edwards wants to play on next season, but with baby No.3 on the way about Octo-ber he might not be available to play each week.
