Sunny Cowboy in bid to double up
SUNNY Cowboy will attempt to maintain a perfect start to his career when he lines up in a smoking hot Class 3 Plate (950m) at Cannon Park this afternoon.
The Trevor Rowe-trained three-year-old notched a smart win on debut two weeks ago under Krysten Swaffer, with the apprentice hoop to take the reins again today.
“He’s new to the stable and was an impressive winner as a maiden,” Rowe said.
“He’s trained on well but he’ll be well up in class.
“He’s only a Class 1 horse with one career start, so class might beat him, and a little bit of inexperience, but he's got a lot of ability.
“I except him to run a very good race, but I wouldn’t be saying he’s a good thing.”
Owned and bred by Brisbane couple Helen and Tony Yeates, Sunny Cowboy arrived in Far North Queensland in the new year.
The gelding has some notable names in his pedigree, with grand-dam Desert Desire being the dam of 2019 Cairns Lightning Handicap winner Desert Cowboy.
“I’ve got no issues with him at all,” Rowe said.
“He’s 100 per cent sound and fit, it’s just whether or not he can take the step up in class.
“I’m sure he will in time, but being a youngster and inexperienced, it might take his toll on him.
Rowe said Sunny Cowboy would be up against horses with plenty of early toe.
“I’ve got another horse in it called Loud ‘n’ Loose and it goes very quickly, but I expect Sunny Cowboy to be very prominent in the finish.”
Rowe will have another nine runners at Cairns today, including Clever Hunter in the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1250m).
“We’ve added the blinkers to him,” Rowe said. “He’s a little bit slow into stride as a rule but I’m expecting him to run another good race.”
