The Cairns Post

Project was well received

-

IN response to LM Gordonvale (CP, 30/05, I am not sure if you are a longtime resident of Gordonvale who can remember the diabolic and chaotic regimen of unregulated camping of between 80 120 camps a night during the drive season prior to Cairns Regional Council taking on the Greenpatch RV Camp and Recreational Park project.

The council acquired the land from the State Government, replaced the inadequate and ageing toilet structure with a new flood-designed building with toilet and shower facilities, for a much improved user experience and environmental outcome.

Campsites are limited to 40 and, with no objections through the development approval process, is closed through the traditional wet season at the end of November to April, with some flexibility either side.

With the limited campsites and the closed season, campers are also encouraged to use the privately-owned caravan parks in our Cairns area, providing a winwin in respect to the drive tourism market.

During the months it is closed, the Greenpatch provides a wonderful open, green recreational space for locals who want to use the picnic huts, toilets and cement pathways for cycling and children on scooters and this has been well used by local families during COVID-19.

The economic benefits to the town of Gordonvale from the RV market visitation are already well evident and appreciated by our small business owners. Cr Brett Moller, division 1
