Squatter issue a hidden curse

-

SOME say out of sight, out of mind, but not for the vigilant eyes of the police and fellow citizens.

Police officers have discovered that some empty homes in Cairns are being used by itinerants and junkies to booze up and shoot up as well as by squatters.

Empty blocks of land, including the old drive-in at Woree, as well as at Cairns North and Earlville also are being frequented by drinkers or squatters.

The surge in the behaviour is a result of getting rid of troublemakers in the CBD as well as issues related to COVID-19.

It’s led to a huge spike in trespassing and vagrancy charges of 80, the second highest monthly total in 20 years.

One property is on the city’s Esplanade waterfront, the former luxury home of the late Dr Leslie Westaway.

It was valued at $1.15 million and has since been sold to the owners of the nearby Acacia Court Hotel.

Police say a number of the homeowners were unaware what was going on until they were told by the police.

Cairns police Sen-Sgt Gary Hunter said “they’re shocked”. “Some of them don’t live in Cairns and they’re absolutely astounded about what their property is being used for.”

Which begs the question: Why aren’t these owners taking care of these properties?

They are big investments and it’s extraordinary that the owners don’t have anyone looking after them like real estate property managers or security firms.

Surely there must be an onus on owners to ensure their properties are kept in reasonable condition and secure from illegal entry.

It beggars belief.
