Salute to mum and champion
TRIBUTES have flowed for Cairns lawyer Melissa Nielsen, who was remembered as a passionate advocate for maternal health, a committed lawyer and dedicated mum. Ms Nielsen dedicated much of her time to the charity Send Hope Not Flowers, for which she raised $150,000 over seven years. “Melissa was our biggest champion and we are truly devastated,” a charity spokeswoman said.
At the news of Ms Nielsen’s terminal diagnosis, the charity team reached out to her.
“We are, quite simply, gutted,” their letter read.
“We are acutely aware of the personal impact you have had in improving maternal health in the region and the powerful good that your hard work has created.”
Papua New Guinea-based obstetrician Dr Barry Kirby remembered Ms Nielsen’s work in maternal care.
“(Melissa was) passionate about helping PNG mothers and our work here, always happy and joyous … her love and caring for mothers in PNG beamed from her smiling eyes.”
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Ms Nielsen was a role model for younger generations to emulate. “She was a young person starting to make a name in Cairns,” Cr Manning said.
“She was being recognised and playing her part.
“I think more young people should take her lead; I think she’s set a great example.” Ms Nielsen’s colleagues at Miller Harris Lawyers described d her as the “life of the firm – baking, bright dresses and celebration”.
“Melissa’s spirit, drive, and empathy for all will not be forgotten. shortnShe has lived her life fully and deeply, and is an inspiration to us all. We will miss her terribly,“a firm spokeswoman - said.
