Vibrant life cut tragically short

-

THE Far North is mourning a very special lady, a mum of three, a devoted wife, a talented lawyer, a passionate advocate for the region and for charitable causes.

Melissa Nielsen was just 39 when she died on Tuesday after being diagnosed with an incurable illness.

Sadly, the dynamic and vibrant woman, who lived life to the fullest, was diagnosed with an inoperable glioma (brain tumour) just over three weeks ago.

Her death has shocked all who knew her but she will leave a lasting legacy.

“I have lived a very blessed life. I married the man of my dreams, have three vivacious gorgeous children, a purposeful career and have the best friends and family a girl could ask for,” Ms Nielsen wrote. “Please look out for my babies and keep them in your village. Be sure to talk about their mum often. Let them know I lived life to the fullest and had fun wherever I went.”

Ms Nielsen touched everyone who met her. She was naturally adored and loved by her family, admired and respected by her colleagues and was a devoted friend to many.

She was a proud Far Northern woman, growing up in Babinda, studying law in Townsville and returning to practise in Cairns, becoming a partner at well regarded Miller Harris Lawyers.

Ms Nielsen’s maternal instinct shone through her Send Hope Not Flowers to help mothers in Papua New Guinea.

In her memory, a fundraiser has been established for a scholarship for young female leaders in her name. Ms Nielsen was unselfishly thinking of others in her last few weeks of life.

It’s hard to believe this amazing woman is no longer with us.
