On Captain Cook statue

-

Can we just remove the Captain Cook statue because it’s ugly and out of place? TD, Redlynch

Heat on for Cook statue removal. (CP, 10/06). Really? The priority of Black Lives Matter in Cairns is to remove a statue of mariner and explorer Lieutenant James Cook? How about assisting indigenous youth to have a safe and nurturing home life, and get them into school, to stop offending and give them the chance for a bright future? How about programs to assist indigenous offenders returning to our community to break the cycle of crime? How about focusing on real issues, rather than the easy ‘sexy’ stuff that solves nothing, and ends up dividing our community?

Black Lives Matter. Is this a racist slogan? To me all lives matter regardless of skin colour. Also if they, radicals, want to remove the Captain Cook statue. Then, if that’s the case, maybe James Cook University should change its name. Oh no, what chance would that have? Wake up. William, Palm Cove also there due to the changes in road conditions and motorists’ own safety after hours.

Peta Credlin. Your editorial gives us all hope that our elected leaders (paid for by the taxpayers) are finally listening. We all need to do our bit though by being diligent with our spending. Take the time to check labels for Aussie-made items, even small things like toothpaste, sauce, cereals, spreads, bathroom products, butter, cream and yoghurt to name just a few. Once you know what is an Aussie product you just buy that brand every time you shop.

Went to drop off some rubbish at the council transfer station, heaps of myna birds everywhere, some have made their home in the drop-off shed. Has Cairns Regional Council got a breeding program there?

Just a thought this time of year: I’m glad we still have global warming or we would have even colder mornings. And if it wasn’t for climate change we would still be in the ice age.

The Queensland Premier has just one motive for her actions. She realises the election is a lost cause for Labor so she intends to leave the incoming mob, a state as bad a basket case as she can. Is Jackie Trad pulling her strings or China? Why else is she ignoring us?

Here’s a short list of things my technical background prevents me believing in: melting icecaps, rising seas, global warming, dangerous man-made climate change, grid-scale wind and solar energy, an Australian COVID-19 pandemic, generic police racism, intelligent politicians, competent bureaucrats. There’s no solid evidence of any of them.
