Women primed for breakthrough opportunity

FNQ GOLF RESULTS

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

THE chance to play her favourite sport with her daughter has Moera Blair pumped for FNQ Rugby’s new women’s competition to kick off.

The Blairs have already ticked off a mother-daughter netball match, but the new competition will give the New Zealanders the opportunity to play their preferred sport before Moera hangs up the boots.

“I think it’s just, being Kiwis, rugby is our sport,” she said.

“It’s great for us older players, but it’s a lot more important for the girls who are about 18 or 19. This competition provides a better pathway.”

The Blairs are among the group ready to hit the field for Mudcrabs, with Russell Todd adding the women’s side to his coaching portfolio.

Todd has been one of the driving forces for women’s rugby in recent years, leading the Tempest Sevens rep sides and pushing for more development of young footballers.

It didn’t take much to get the Englishman to agree to coach the side.

“We’ve had a successful junior girls and rep program at the club, but six or seven of the girls are now too old for juniors,” Todd said. “Before, we couldn’t give them the opportunity to play senior rugby.”

FNQ Rugby’s new season is set to start on July 25.

SUNDAY July 21 was the second day of the Club Championships. The weather wasn’t that bad but sadly the numbers were down a little from last week’s great turnout. However I know those that played, in the 4AM/4K sponsored Trophy Day and for the Quicksilver Trophy, enjoyed themselves. Thanks again to our wonderful sponsors.

This year’s A Grade Men’s Champion with a very creditable gross over the two days of 151 strokes was Justin Cifuentes, who was also the overall Club Champion.

Runner-up in A Grade was Warrick Howarth on 155 strokes and with this score he also was the senior Champion for 2020.

The B Grade Men’s Champion with a gross score of 169 strokes was Kelvin Groves; only one stroke behind him on 170 was the Old Master Bruce Hunter. Well done guys, good consistent golf.

The C Grade Men’s Champion was Gary Lobenwein who was debating whether to brave the weather or not and he came home with a gross score of 190 strokes over the two days; the runner up in this grade with 206 strokes was Gary Sinclair.

The best net score with a 69 was Justin Cifuentes with Bruce Hunter second and Kelvin Groves in third. The best 18 hole net over the two days was Gary Lobenwein, his 65 on day one was not beaten.

There was a nice tussle for bragging rights in the ladies between Alicia English and Tracey Dickinson, however the winner was Alicia, who, like two weeks ago, amazed your scribe with her second shot on number 12.

Nearest to the pins was 1/10 was my playing partner Guy Williams, Justin Cifuentes added to his impressive day with his winning tee shot on 5/14. The second shot for men on 8/17 was Warrick Howarth and the ladies winner was Tracey Dickinson, Tracey’s winning shot on this hole taught me the real difference in how the men and women play golf.

Although there was some great golf shots over the two days of the Championships the contest for the best of these was between David Welch for his final shot of the day on number 18, and Trevor Warrener first shot of the day on number 1, I have given the title to Trevor who may decide to get something done about the block work at the front of no.1 tee box.

Winners of today’s draws were Greg Taylor, Kelvin Groves, Graham Suffield and one other that I didn’t record, there was no winner of the members’ draw this week but as Geoff cleaned us out last week it was no big deal.

Next week is a stableford event sponsored by Williams, Graham and Carmen. Also committee members are reminded there is a meeting next week. The captains would like the thank Ross Heidke who came by to do the board, thanks mate, a great help. See you all next week.

AFTER a close tussle, Danny Bradley managed to take out the Men’s Championships for 2020. B grader Shane Soper put up a great fight only missing out by 3 shots. He took out the B grade for the men. C grade winner was Dave Hyde. He also won the prize for the Senior men, with Luke Bradley winning the Junior boys trophy.

Prudence Wright was the runaway winner for the Ladies, as well as taking the Junior girls trophy. Caraline Soper was the winner of the C grade ladies, while Kate Bolton was the Senior lady winner.

In the Rankine Shield, Dave Hyde won the 36 hole Nett event. With the new handicapping system there is an obvious anomaly between the grades used to determine the championships when compared with the daily handicaps. However, the Rankine Shield has always been open for players with a daily handicap of 18 or less.

Next Sunday we will be playing the Men’s and Ladies’ foursomes, so nominate your teams with Tarnia so she can organise the draw.

Don’t forget to nominate for the Open on July 4 and 5.

The course is great condition, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers. If you have some free time in the next fortnight, feel free to lend a hand to get ready for the big weekend.
