Freeze would be welcomed

-

CAIRNS regional councillors are today expected to freeze all fees and charges for the coming financial year.

The move is in response to the financial crisis the city and region is in due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Far North is one of the hardest-hit regions of any in Australia due to a reliance on tourism.

The jobless rate is about a quarter and without JobKeeper and JobSeeker, the figures would be much worse.

The economy is going backwards and there will be no respite until the Queensland border is open, hopefully on July 10, so cold southerners can make the trip north for a warm break.

In the meantime, officers have recommended to today’s council meeting that hikes to fees and charges for things like dog registration, venue hire and dump costs be suspended for 12 months.

Parking fees are also due to increase 20c up to $2 per hour but look likely to stay at the current

$1.80 level.

It’s unlikely there will be a stay on rates and water, rubbish and sewerage costs, however it is hoped any increases will be the bare minimum.

It’s a welcome move by the council and it will be a brave councillor who votes against the recommendations.

The council knows many of its ratepayers and residents are struggling financially and also gave a good extension to the half-yearly rates deadline this year.

There can’t be a cut in rates as the council still needs to cover all its services and pay a workforce that provides many vital jobs in the community.

Any more fast-tracking of capital works will be welcome too. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
