Youth and experience to clash on golf course

- ROWAN SPARKES

WHEN 14-year-old Angel Pizzichemi entered the new Queen of the North golf tournament, she wasn’t quite sure what she was getting into.

The tournament’s youngest entrant, Pizzichemi has drawn the challenge of her golfing life to date, as she comes up against Far North Queensland District Ladies Golf Association president and reigning

Erina Williams in the first round.

But Pizzichemi doesn’t seem fazed, saying she couldn’t wait to test herself against the best.

“I’m pretty nervous, but we’ll see how it goes,” she said.

“Hopefully I have a good day as I’ve been playing pretty well lately.

“I’ve come up against her a few times before. Last year I played a competition with her and she got me then, but I’ll try and get her this year. A little bit of redemption, maybe.”

Fellow Queen of the North entrant Georgia Buckle said she also wanted to put her skills to the test.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun because there’s a heap of really good players and I’m just excited to test my skills against everybody else,” she said.

“It’s a pretty fair event and everything’s handicapped, so it gives everybody a fair go.”

Buckle said she expected Pizzichemi would pose a threat to the rest of the field, despite her age and tough opening match-up.

“I think she’s only just turned 14 but she is a very, very good golfer,” she said.

“I wouldn’t want to come up against her.”

The Queen of the North is a handicap matchplay tournament running in conjunction with the established King of the North men’s tournament.

It pits 16 of the region’s best female golfers against one another over three rounds of one-on-one matches.

After three rounds, the two women who remain undefeated will go head-to-head in the grand final at Atherton Golf Club on September 26, alongside the men’s decider on the same day.
