Reef island hits top five

- JACK LAWRIE

A GREAT Barrier Reef island resort off the Far North Queensland coast has been recognised in a prestigious global travel award list.

Lizard Island has been named in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 2020 as No.2 in the Top 5 Resort Hotels in Australia and New Zealand category.

It’s the first time the island has been in the globally recognised awards and comes as it prepares to reopen on September 1 after closing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Lizard Island achieved a score of 94.59 out of a possible 100, placing it as the best Australian resort in the top 5 list.

Executive director of parks and resorts for Delaware North Greg Magi said the news of the resort’s inclusion in the list was an honour for the team at Lizard Island.

“We value this recognition particularly as it’s a readerdriven list, so it’s a real testimony to Lizard Island’s enduring appeal as people are planning their holidays once again,” he said.

“It’s an ideal time to take the short flight from Cairns over the stunning Great Barrier Reef, escaping to days of relaxed luxury, natural exploration, world-class food and wine, and detox from digital life in a mostly internet-free zone.”

Lizard Island is the northernmost island on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.
