On other things
The hiatus in cruise ships visiting Cairns needs to be used to assess the impact of cruise ships on our ecology, and the masses of short-term visitors on our infrastructure and society. Many locals in Cairns have realised cruise ships bring many benefits but also significant disadvantages. As the pandemic has highlighted, Cairns needs more than tourism, and the chance of Chinese tourists and cruise ships returning right now maybe isn’t a bad thing. We need to diversify and the three levels of government need to take the lead.

Up the mighty Wanderers! I look forward to seeing the Green Machine back on the rugby field; the comp is not the same without them.

Ric in Brinsmead (CP, 13/7) full-time firefighters respond in real time at a speed impossible for volunteers. A house fire would be sticks under your proposed model. In QLD they also respond to swiftwater rescue. The SES does floodwater. It’s a very different thing.

Is ScoMo good or great? So far he’s had drought, bushfires and corona to deal with and now it seems behind the scenes a very spoilt China — much more than previous PMs, and has handled it all pretty well. I agree that we need to navigate our financial way out of this to get a mentality of being more independent and returning manufacturing to within our shores. To do this though we need to make goods affordable and that means managing water, electricity and labour costs. Without those three things we will not navigate a financial recovery effectively. If managed effectively the flow-on effect will be more sustainable jobs, more Aussie products on our shelves and less people reliant on Centrelink.

Heard of political afterpay? That’s when a politician spends his time in government working for a company who will give him a very well-paid job after politics. It should be banned.

Rick, Redlynch (CP, 13/7) wants “Answers please?” Well Rick, here’s one. How about you do what most people do and carry a small hand sanitiser in your car. That way when you take your paid-parking ticket back to your car, you can also clean your hands. Surely you can do something for yourself.

There is no alternative transport plan for the CBD. Pay for parking is the future. Get used to it.

Steve (CP, 11/07) I don’t think an environmental wildlife protector demonstrating his democratic rights is dirty, filthy or noisy. The ignorant derogatory message reflects more on you than the protester. Democrat, Cairns
