Road to bush luxury
THE Crystalbrook Lodge development has taken another step forward with Mareeba Shire Council approving a change in internal road surfaces.
The project, involving luxury accommodation being built at Crystalbrook Station 180km west of Cairns near Chillagoe, was given the green light by the council in May.
But the subject of road surfaces was discussed this week at Wednesday’s ordinary council meeting because the developer, Crystalbrook Collection, is keen to feature materials on the internal roads and carparks that were more in tune with the remote location.
“The applicant requests internal driveways remain dirt in keeping with the outback character sought for the development,” the material change of use document stated.
Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said the developer wanted to “go with gravel driveways to fit with the area”.
“They want visitors to feel they are in the bush and experiencing a bush setting,” she said.
“We welcome it because it’s a genuine outback experience and there will be many visitors from Australia who want to experience that, as well as international visitors who will have a rare opportunity.
“And we are pleased they are working through the process now so the development is ready to go when the economy opens up after COVID.”
Crystalbrook Collection plans to spend $10 million transforming the cattle station into a luxury tourist destination that offers an outback experience with modern conveniences.
Spokeswoman Melissa Heneghan said there was presently “no confirmed timing for the development”.
“(It) will be dependent on economic, tourism and aviation stability and growth,” she said.
“Crystalbrook Lodge is located at the heart of Crystalbrook Station and plays a vital role in our brand journey.
“It is the home of our signature Crystalbrook Beef and where our appreciation for nature, the environment and responsible luxury stems.
“The expansion will include eco-villas and expansive recreation facilities designed to provide a true outback experience connected to the local environment.”
