Goulding renews deal with Melbourne United

- MATT LOGUE

MELBOURNE United stalwart Chris Goulding has declared he plans to extend his stellar career into his mid-30s after re-signing with the franchise for three seasons.

In a huge boost for United’s championship ambitions, Goulding knocked back interest from rival teams to commit to a long-term deal.

Now the 31-year-old shooting guard has his sights set on helping Melbourne regain its mantle as the NBL’s premier team – and hasn’t ruled out playing beyond his current deal.

“I’ve signed for three years and maybe more,” Goulding said. “The body is fine. You’re the second guy who has asked if I think I will retire.”

Goulding revealed he seriously looked at Europe as a career option, but the coronavirus pandemic made it difficult to progress negotiations.

“There was just so much unknown,” he said.

“I don’t think we are getting out of this COVID lifestyle anytime soon and I’ve got a young family on the way, so I think to stay home in Melbourne and continue with a club that I’ve had a great relationship with was the smart thing to do.”

Coronavirus crisis aside, Goulding had a burning desire to return United to the top after guiding the franchise to its maiden NBL championship in 2017/18 as the Finals MVP.

He also has a deep connection with the club’s staff and players, built from his five seasons dating back to 2015.

United coach Dean Vickerman was thrilled to retain Goulding on a long-term deal.

“Chris had other opportunities in front of him, so we’re happy he’s made the choice to stay,” Vickerman said.

The NBL is yet to announce the schedule for the 2020/21 season, but hopes to start by December 3.
