Cairns tourism will be grateful

-

THE JobKeeper extension is welcome news, especially for the region’s multi-billion dollar tourism industry.

The extension of JobKeeper was anticipated by businesses across the economy but it was not certain and none will be more grateful than the holiday sector in Cairns and the greater region.

The extension will give tourism operators the certainty so they can plan for the retention of staff and management of resources in the months ahead until the international borders re-open.

Tourism businesses have been hit hard this year, not just by COVID, but by bushfires, droughts and floods.

They are keen to get back to business and are waiting eagerly to welcome back guests from overseas.

Having skilled staff ready and waiting to go will be critical in the pace of the rebuilding process.

The new March extension date will be helpful for some tourism businesses but there will be many internationally-focused businesses which will require further support and, sadly, some which will not survive.

Many businesses in the Far North have invested heavily in developing their tourism offerings which appeal to global tourists, especially the Reef and rainforest experiences, but also natural attractions, Indigenous tours, food and wine experiences and eco resorts.

These businesses need to be protected so the industry is ready when the first flights from overseas arrive, hopefully next year.

Until then something needs to be provided to support the businesses which are on hold until the international gates re-open because JobKeeper is not expected to last that long.
